Most leadership teams confuse the storm outside with the fire they chose to start

Most leadership teams confuse the storm outside with the fire they chose to start.

Environmental melt is world-imposed disruption: technological change, regulatory shifts, new competitors, customer behavior moving under your feet. Chosen melt is deliberate disruption: the experiment you run, the process you kill, the market you enter, the structure you remake. One is weather. The other is a decision.

Confuse them and you make bad calls in both directions. You treat environmental melt as optional and adapt too slowly. Or you treat chosen melt as inevitable and excuse self-inflicted chaos as if the market forced your hand.

That matters now because the pace of external change is high, and many organizations are masking the difference. Denial gets dressed up as discipline. Thrash gets dressed up as transformation. First name the weather. Then choose your fire.
