When one person can do what ten used to do, trust stops being a byproduct of work

When one person can do what ten used to do, trust stops being a byproduct of work.

In the book, I call that missing current Ren: the density of trust, benevolence, and shared history between people. In the one-man-job world, work no longer produces enough of it by accident.

Ren has three channels: collaboration on real shared problems, shared commitment to a mission—or, more honestly for most companies, to quality—and play, meaning unscored time together where status can suspend. A retreat cannot replace craft. Purpose talk cannot replace contact. Mandatory fun is just work in costume.

That matters now because AI and distributed work are narrowing the first channel and faking the second. If you do not build all three deliberately, you get Li without Ren: rituals, meetings, and culture language with no human current inside them.
