Perfect compliance without soul has a name: the Village Honest Person.
Confucius’s warning was not about obvious bad actors. It was about the person who follows the forms perfectly and still hollows them out. Li without Ren: ritual form without humaneness. Every box checked. Nothing alive inside it.
You can see it in the “blameless postmortem” where criticism is technically allowed but socially fatal. The agenda is clean. The language is correct. Nobody says the thing that matters, because everyone knows the punishment has only been delayed.
That matters because modern work keeps generating more form and less human substrate. More process, more scripted candor, more compliance. If you build more Li than your Ren can fill, you do not get a truthful culture. You get management theater that fails exactly when truth becomes expensive.
