The most expensive process in a company is usually the one nobody believes in but everyone still has to touch.
The common mistake is to either leave dead structure in place out of politeness, or delete it quietly and lose the lesson with it. That creates haunted residue: old pricing logic, old review rituals, old dashboards still shaping behavior long after they stopped earning the right.
A better move is to run a Deprecation Ceremony, keep a Scrap Heap Library, and fund it with a Sunset Budget.
Three rules. Name what is ending in public. Write a short obituary: what it enabled, why it no longer fits, what replaces it. Move the artifacts into a visible archive so the next team can study the corpse instead of resurrecting it. Reserve actual time and money each quarter for removal work, or the living system will always lose to the urgent one.
Do not use this in a low-trust team right after a political failure. Then it becomes a disguised blame ritual.
If you want less theater, stop letting dead structure die in secret.
