The Durkheim Constraint explains why ritual must feel received, not merely invented

Most company rituals fail for a simple reason: everyone in the room knows they were invented last Tuesday.

Durkheim’s point was that social forms matter when they arrive with force from outside the individual. A real ritual is not just a meeting with better branding. It feels like a social fact: something you enter and submit to, not something you negotiate in real time.

You can see the difference in the average “ritualized” retro. New name. Better facilitation. A preamble about candor. And everyone is still watching the org chart. If leadership authored the form, leadership can bend it tomorrow. So people do not trust the container. They manage their exposure inside it.

That is the Durkheim Constraint. If you want ritual to carry heat, it has to feel received, not merely invented.
