Meta didn’t just say AI is boosting productivity. Zuckerberg said one very talented employee can now do work that used to require entire teams.
What matters here is also the naming move. Once team reduction is framed as “elevating individual contributors,” any later miss gets linguistically protected. It will not be called underbuilding, bad judgment, or failure. It will be blamed on talent density, compute, or execution.
Confucius called this the Rectification of Names. In plain English: if leaders cannot call a failure a failure, truth-telling rituals become theater. The postmortem still happens. The all-hands still happens. But everyone in the room knows the permitted vocabulary arrived before the facts did.
Serious operators should watch the language before they watch the org chart. A company with no honest name for a bad bet cannot learn, no matter how flat the team gets.
